"Sotavento" - Desert, dunes and wind

“Sotavento” refers to the sense of geographic orientation of the parts of an island that are located to the south (as opposed to the term “Barlovento” which refers to the north). For example, the lower end of the island of Fuerteventura (one of the Canary Islands) is divided into two bands: the Barlovento of Morro Jable and the Sotavento of Cofete.

I used this term to name this gallery because of two factors: on one side mostly all the shots were taken in Maspalomas dunes, in the south of Gran Canaria island, providing this perception of geographic orientation and on the other side the terms “Barlovento” and “Sotavento” are frequently used in toponymy on a local or regional scale. An example of that, apart of the one we saw before, is the island of La Palma, also in the Canary Islands, where the municipality of Barlovento is also located in the northeast of the island.
